Beard Shave Phase 1 Complete - Phase 2 begins

By rich | June 16, 2008

We have completed Phase 1 and picked some collective winners.
Clean Chinny is the closest to what I actually shaved, followed by Truman Sparks, Senior Perelli, and Frank.

Thanks for all the suggestions on the beard. Some being extremely cool, some being completely ridiculous and some just a means to tear my face up with razor cuts. Not nice!

Now on to Phase 2. Visit the Shave-O-Matic again to continue with new suggestions now that I have a new shave.

The winners:

And the actual shave in real life (yes, that’s tons of bird poo on the fire hydrant):

$70 Million Budget Breaker

By nicola | June 15, 2008

This had to hurt; I read recently that the 2007 budget for the BBC website had gone £36 million over budget (that’s around $70 million). The report sighted “a cocktail of oversight and budget mismanagement” that lead to the budget overspill.

About two-thirds of the £36m breach was down to “misallocation of general overheads and costs” - accountants had failed to include costs such as the buildings that house its digital teams. Then, there was the £3.5m in unauthorized overspend and a further £7.4m in overspending.

BBC.co.uk is one of the UK’s leading online media destinations and by the end of last year, according to Nielson, the website had an average of 16.5 million users a month, almost half of the total 33 million internet users in the UK.

Title Art

By mike | June 13, 2008

I’ve always been a big fan of movie title sequences. When done correctly, they really help set the tone for a film, and in some cases (Bond, Iron Man, Spiderman) even give you a bit of the synopsis of what lies ahead. Almost like reading the chapter titles in a new book for hints of what’s to come before you start reading.

Got the link below in the mail today from our good friend and illustrator Warner McGee. It’s essentially a blog that chronicles favorite title sequences of the author - quickly clicking through you can see why most were chosen. Check it all out in its video glory soon before they get hit with copyright notices.

See it here at Art of the Title.

Ouch, Yahoo!

By chris | June 13, 2008

This stock chart says it all. Timeframe is yesterday during their recent announcement of a partnership ceding total domination of the search market to Google. That’s gotta hurt.

Finally. MySpace Gets a Redesign.

By chris | June 13, 2008

Man, is it about time. I’ve always hated the cluttered MySpace interface (one reason I’m on Facebook instead), so it’s nice to read about their upcoming relaunch of “MySpace 2.0.”

You can read the full rundown of features on TechCrunch, but here’s a quick highlight, and a couple screens.

Changes:

In competitive news, Facebook just caught MySpace in terms of unique visitors. This is worldwide… MySpace still rules in the U.S.

Covering Your Tails

By robert | June 12, 2008

Amid all the hub-bub of the shave-o-matic premiere we managed to release a new starter site/blog for VetCareComplete, a new pet health insurance company in Richmond, VA. Because they were just coming out of the blocks we were able to help with overall brand planning, the new identity and tagline and the stage 1 site. The blog will be the basis of a community platform, while a companion site will rollout once the insurance plans are finalized and the company is ready to begin servicing customers and affiliate vets. In the meantime, look for true life stories from the founders (practicing veterinarians) about the crazy things pets get themselves into and therefore the reason they need comprehensive health insurance (just like their owners). Thanks to Matt, Keith and A.J.

Begin of Beard Extravaganza

By rich | June 11, 2008

RY’s beard has been growing since November… with very little trimming for the last few months. Usually it’s off by now for concern over the sweltering heat and when the NJ Devils end up losing in the NHL playoffs (far too often over the past few years).

This year, we’re trying something different. We’re letting EVERYONE have a hand in trimming this unsightly facebush.

Over the next few weeks, we will be accepting design shaves using the Blue Ion Shave-O-Matic. Go there to start shaving RY and submit your design for the first round. Keep in mind, we’ll be trying to gradually get a clean face, so nothing too dramatic to start. We’d like to extend it for the weeks ahead.

RY will be wearing these designs around town, knowing that he’s gotta represent the design chosen.

Come back often for updates of how the beard has been shaved, and visit the Shave-O-Matic every once in a while to enter the next round.

This is what you’re currently working with:

Castro prepares his guerillas

Castro prepares.

Trim that bush!

The bush to be trimmed.

Strawberry Shortcake’s Extreme Makeover

By robert | June 11, 2008

In a celebrity expose, the New York Times reports on Strawberry Shortcake’s continued makeover. The 1980s superstar was feeling a bit doughty in this 21st century…so she’s had work done and continues to adopt significant wardrobe and dietary changes. In recent years her eyes and cheekbones have been “enhanced,” bloomers were tossed out in favor of polka-dot capri pants, she’s wearing lipstick, and eating fresh fruit instead of all that candy. Apparently, American Greetings and her stylist team thought she was out of touch with today’s girls.

Celebrity makeovers are tricky, as the Times reports. In 1993 Mattel’s stylists tried to work with Ken but the resulting Earring Magic Ken….sporting blond highlights, a purple mesh t-shirt and leather vest, and the eponymous earring…..bombed with girls, boys and concerned parents alike.

Carbon-Neutral Air Travel With Derrie-Air

By chris | June 6, 2008

It was only a matter of time until someone stepped up and offered a guilt-free way to fly. A new airline called Derrie-Air bills itself as the “world’s only carbon-neutral luxury airline.”

To quote from the site:

Derrie-Air will be the only airline that plants trees to offset every pound of carbon that our planes release into the atmosphere.

But here’s the best part - if you weigh less, you pay less. Based on a sliding scale, your weight plus your baggage ultimately determines how much your fare is.

Another amazing quote:

The heavier you and your luggage are, the more trees we’ll plant to make up for the trouble of flying you from place to place.

Here’s a sampling of their fares based on weight.

We’re glad to see someone stepping up to the plate with original ideas for solving the world’s biggest problems. Nicely done, Derrie-Air.
