Carbon-Neutral Air Travel With Derrie-Air
Friday, June 6th, 2008![]()
It was only a matter of time until someone stepped up and offered a guilt-free way to fly. A new airline called Derrie-Air bills itself as the “world’s only carbon-neutral luxury airline.”
To quote from the site:
Derrie-Air will be the only airline that plants trees to offset every pound of carbon that our planes release into the atmosphere.
But here’s the best part - if you weigh less, you pay less. Based on a sliding scale, your weight plus your baggage ultimately determines how much your fare is.
Another amazing quote:
The heavier you and your luggage are, the more trees we’ll plant to make up for the trouble of flying you from place to place.
Here’s a sampling of their fares based on weight.

We’re glad to see someone stepping up to the plate with original ideas for solving the world’s biggest problems. Nicely done, Derrie-Air.

Bike Share System
Friday, May 30th, 2008Came across this nice bike sharing system concept from Continuum. It’s an unmanned, self-service kiosk that allows you to swipe a public transit smart card and grab a bike. It’s nice and urban compact….14 bicycles racked on the station occupy the same amount of space as a parking space for one car. And solar energy powers the card readers and security system.
More and more of these bike share/kiosks are popping up in cities worldwide. It’s time to make it happen here in Charleston.

There’s No “My” In “We”
Wednesday, May 21st, 2008It’s about time that all the internet-related “my” hype dies. Isn’t the “Me Decade” supposed to be over? Wasn’t that the 80s or 90s? Together, WE can end the MYbrandname.com trend. It’s not really just your brand anyway, is it?
So, here’s to more “we” in our lives. We = community, connections, social networks, etc. I like Al Gore’s new We Can Solve It campaign to end global warming. It’s important, hip, positive and even looks fun. Me is just a backwards and upside version of we anyway. And most of all, we is something we can do together.

Morning Commute in Charleston
Friday, March 21st, 2008Being the first day of Spring…and such a nice day at that…decided to share the joy the daily pedal to work. Very lucky to be able to ride back and forth in this amazing downtown. Now if we could get some bike lanes, please. You will notice that one segment along East Bay shows the almost-complete ped-bike lane that connects to the bridge. Nice. Other highlights include Roscoe’s morning bark routine, a sneak peak at the soon-to-come Caviar & Bananas location, and the currently transforming Cigar Factory. Happy Spring.

ULI Sustainable Program Site
Friday, March 7th, 2008
We recently worked with the SC chapter of ULI to develop a nano-site for a new sustainable growth leadership program. Called the ULI South Carolina Center for Sustainable Leadership, it’s a statewide effort that engages 54 leaders from the private, public, and non-profit sectors to address community visioning and implementation issues pertaining to the growth in the state. The core of the program is a series of innovative, interactive classes that focus on best practices, case studies and current conditions in sustainable land use; and leadership roles.
Thanks to Paige King and the SC ULI team for allowing us to play a small role in this great program.

Joe To Go
Wednesday, October 17th, 2007
From our offices overlooking one of Charleston’s port facilities we watch shipping containers come and go all day long….off the ships, into stacks, onto trains and trucks, and then all over again. It’s like watching an army of ants work a picnic spread….and the sheer number of metal container boxes is mind boggling. There’s growing interest in adaptive uses for these boxes….(here in town the American College of the Building Arts used them to store tools in its Navy Yard school facility).
Here’s a cool use from illy…the Italian coffee brand. This holiday season if you find yourself in New York and exhausted from the cheer of it all you can stop by illy’s temporary Push Button House cafe at Time Warner Center for an expresso fix.
With the push of a button, the container house opens in 90 seconds and transforms into a fully furnished and functional space with a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom, living room and library. All materials used in the Biennale house were recyclable or recycled. A tasty blend of sustainable design and pop up retail.

28 Days Later: Recycling
Monday, October 1st, 2007No, we’re not talking brain-eating Zombies. But this story is liable to give you a fright. 28 Days after initiating a recycling program in our office, it seems there is a lack of effort in actually GETTING the recyclable goods to the plant.
When questioned on the subject, newly appointed Vice President of Recycling at Blue Ion, CS, was unable to be reached for comment. His office did release this statement:
“The difficult part is not INITIATING the recycling program. Or PUTTING recyclable goods in the bins. It’s the actual RECYCLING part that has been difficult. And that’s the most important PART of the Recycling program. We will do a better job.”
Similar to the Great Trash Take-Out fiasco at Wentworth Street, it seems the Recycling Program may need some re-tooling. Perhaps some assignments of who is to take it to be recycled on a regular basis. Or even Intern JTPI.
This photo says it all.

Bike Dispenser
Wednesday, August 29th, 2007
Given our love of all things Velocipedian, here’s a cool program from Amsterdam developed by a company called bikedispenser.com (this website is not that helpful…aren’t all sites supposed to be in English?). The idea is to help facilitate bike rentals in urban areas….where cyclists pay a small fee to hire a ride, take it where they please, and then return it to any machine around town. To help prevent “permanent rentals” they fit the bikes with RFID tags, so they can track you down.
Paris has its own cool new bike rental system called Velib (i can’t read this site either). It’s a self service system where you rent and return any of the 10,000+ bikes in any of 750 locations all around Paris. Apparently you can even rent a small French dog to mount on the handlebars.

While we wait for our made in the USA knockoff…here’s a two wheeled program that those in the ad biz can get behind. It’s called AdRide Bicycles and offers a smart alternative to the mobile billboards being pulled by particulate-spewing trucks on many metro streets. Best of all, interns could be used to push them around all day.

Blue Ion Goes Green
Friday, August 3rd, 2007Thanks the the constant prodding and insights of our friends at Go Green Charleston, we finally made the most basic step in going green here in the office - recycling!
Yes, it sounds basic enough, but with no curbside pickup, it’s been tough deciding who will drive the bins down the road. Ping Pong death matches will be the decider from now on.
Here’s a shot of our new bins.

Wait.. upon closer review, maybe we are a little more forward-thinking with our recycling efforts that you would think. Everything has its place - everything!
