World’s Biggest Drawing

Friday, June 27th, 2008

This caught my eye recently.  Swedish artist Erik Nordenankar claimed to have created the world’s biggest drawing. Using a GPS device nestled in a briefcase as his pen, and the word as his canvas he sent the briefcase via DHL on a journey around the world, with specific instructions on where exactly to ship the case and in what order.  By tracking the journey, the coordinates made a self portrait of himself.

Check it out:

Turns out it didn’t actually happen, but brilliant idea though, and great exposure for DHL who even allowed him to film in their facilities.

Twitter Favs

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Just wasted 30 precious minutes on FARVD, which uses an algorithm to pull tweets marked as favorites by its favoriters. Corporate tweets need not apply. Some funny stuff. Enjoy.

Brain Child

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Like any great work of art, after the awe of the initial viewing wears off, the mind is left to wonder “how did this all come about?”. Search no more, my friends. Things were bottled up tight during the Beard site development (minus a few attempts by CS to let the cat out of the bag early), but thanks to the extreme sneakiness of some members of the team, we were able to capture behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the Beard website.

Exclusive film can be seen after skipping the intro here - beard.blueion.com

hint: play around with the red signs…

Social Netiquette

Monday, June 16th, 2008

A recent study conducted by Orange, revealed that 62% of all Brits are becoming increasingly frustrated and confused by situations they find themselves in on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace.

To help alleviate the confusion and help us avoid any potentially embarrassing predicament, Debrett’s, the UK etiquette experts, have developed a set of golden rules to help us politely navigate social networking sites.

Here’s a sampling:

You don’t have to make friends with people you don’t know. It is not a competition to see how many friends you can get. Think before you poke.

Always wait 24 hours before accepting or removing someone as a friend. The delay will help you gather your thoughts.

Consider your friends’ feelings before posting pictures. Put yourself in their shoes before clicking upload.

Title Art

Friday, June 13th, 2008

I’ve always been a big fan of movie title sequences. When done correctly, they really help set the tone for a film, and in some cases (Bond, Iron Man, Spiderman) even give you a bit of the synopsis of what lies ahead. Almost like reading the chapter titles in a new book for hints of what’s to come before you start reading.

Got the link below in the mail today from our good friend and illustrator Warner McGee. It’s essentially a blog that chronicles favorite title sequences of the author - quickly clicking through you can see why most were chosen. Check it all out in its video glory soon before they get hit with copyright notices.

See it here at Art of the Title.

Ouch, Yahoo!

This stock chart says it all. Timeframe is yesterday during their recent announcement of a partnership ceding total domination of the search market to Google. That’s gotta hurt.

Strawberry Shortcake’s Extreme Makeover

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

In a celebrity expose, the New York Times reports on Strawberry Shortcake’s continued makeover. The 1980s superstar was feeling a bit doughty in this 21st century…so she’s had work done and continues to adopt significant wardrobe and dietary changes. In recent years her eyes and cheekbones have been “enhanced,” bloomers were tossed out in favor of polka-dot capri pants, she’s wearing lipstick, and eating fresh fruit instead of all that candy. Apparently, American Greetings and her stylist team thought she was out of touch with today’s girls.

Celebrity makeovers are tricky, as the Times reports. In 1993 Mattel’s stylists tried to work with Ken but the resulting Earring Magic Ken….sporting blond highlights, a purple mesh t-shirt and leather vest, and the eponymous earring…..bombed with girls, boys and concerned parents alike.

Carbon-Neutral Air Travel With Derrie-Air

Friday, June 6th, 2008

It was only a matter of time until someone stepped up and offered a guilt-free way to fly. A new airline called Derrie-Air bills itself as the “world’s only carbon-neutral luxury airline.”

To quote from the site:

Derrie-Air will be the only airline that plants trees to offset every pound of carbon that our planes release into the atmosphere.

But here’s the best part - if you weigh less, you pay less. Based on a sliding scale, your weight plus your baggage ultimately determines how much your fare is.

Another amazing quote:

The heavier you and your luggage are, the more trees we’ll plant to make up for the trouble of flying you from place to place.

Here’s a sampling of their fares based on weight.

We’re glad to see someone stepping up to the plate with original ideas for solving the world’s biggest problems. Nicely done, Derrie-Air.

Feltron Annual Report

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Just paged through the Feltron 2007 Annual Report from designer Nicholas Felton. Pretty cool on two levels (at least). The way he’s presented and visualized the data is awesome…a different approach that communicates simply and powerfully. But the actual data collection itself is the really interesting part. He’s chronicled an entire year’s worth of his activity…down to the minutia of postcards received, teeth lost by his cat, karaoke songs performed, etc. Would be a interesting way to break down the activities of an organization over the course of a year….to get a clearer picture of what’s going on. We’ll get James on it.
