Charleston in the Spotlight
By blueion | January 11, 2008

Rode to a meeting near the College of Charleston today and got caught up in the all hoopla of Barrack Obama’s visit and speech at the college. Fun to see the spectacle of it all…the energetic crowd, campaign graphics, news trucks, reporters and staffers running around. While the buzz is all about the presidential race, you couldn’t help but feel that Charleston came out a big winner. With all eyes on the city, the weather was perfect (75 and blue skies) and the setting over the top (backdrop of Randolph Hall with the crowd standing under the live oaks and Spanish moss). Hard to script it much better for our city. Certainly more inviting than the frozen tundra of Iowa and snow drifts in New Hampshire.

The College of Charleston’s Cistern Yard was the epicenter of the Democratic campaign yesterday with in excess of 150 different news organizations credentialed for the event, including many from foreign countries. Mayor Riley gave as impassioned a speech as I’ve ever seen him give, and Senator John Kerry was remarkably genuine. Of course, Senator Obama was the hit of the day, but as Robert mentioned in his blog, Charleston was the clear winner in all of this.

Despite the crowded downtown streets, it’s hard to complain about the weather, the historic setting, the buzz, and the energy for change while walking down beautiful streets, hanging in the parking lot with smart people, and wondering which rooftops had secret service sharpshooters… a very cool experience in ‘paradise.’

Dan and Steve…thanks for the notes. Only thing that could have made it better is live music afterwards and the rest of day off. Best.

Senator Kerry sure is genuine … genuinely wrong. Woot!
Charleston will also be the site of a new movie with Mr. Kevin Costner. I believe filming will start late fall 2008.
