Enough said (reads both ways)…on the eve of college football’s opening weekend. MH will be in attendance as Carolina hosts the fighting crawdads of Lafayette Louisiana High. Go Cocks!

BD Gets a ‘Hawk

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

This week marked the dawning of a new era here at Blue Ion. Everyone’s favorite developer, Mr. BD, came to work on Monday sporting a ‘hawk. He claims it was part of a birthday celebration, but we think it’s just to make us think twice about asking him to take those animated GIFs to the next level.

Here are some recent sightings captured with the iMac camera.

Bike Dispenser

Given our love of all things Velocipedian, here’s a cool program from Amsterdam developed by a company called bikedispenser.com (this website is not that helpful…aren’t all sites supposed to be in English?). The idea is to help facilitate bike rentals in urban areas….where cyclists pay a small fee to hire a ride, take it where they please, and then return it to any machine around town. To help prevent “permanent rentals” they fit the bikes with RFID tags, so they can track you down.

Paris has its own cool new bike rental system called Velib (i can’t read this site either). It’s a self service system where you rent and return any of the 10,000+ bikes in any of 750 locations all around Paris. Apparently you can even rent a small French dog to mount on the handlebars.

While we wait for our made in the USA knockoff…here’s a two wheeled program that those in the ad biz can get behind. It’s called AdRide Bicycles and offers a smart alternative to the mobile billboards being pulled by particulate-spewing trucks on many metro streets. Best of all, interns could be used to push them around all day.

It’s been a while since we’ve done a post for the ladies. No, this isn’t a still from the prequel to Cocoon (though who doesn’t love Wilford Brimley?). Rising from the shadowy depths, I present you the events that tolled at 2300 hours as part of the RP birthday extravaganza.

Rest assured those aren’t Coke cans in their hands.

RP Birthday

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

rp_kbar.jpg

RP celebrates his birthday today. Naturally, the Marines got wind of the occasion and dispatched an Iraqi officer (Major General for those in the know) to present him with an official KA-BAR knife.

Check back next week to see how many fingers he has left. (He really got the knife).

Working on some web plans today…and trying desparately to keep this thought front and center. “But it would be so cool…”

I’ve got a touch of Churrascaria

Monday, August 20th, 2007

rioz.jpg

Hey. You! Like meat? Like lots of meats? Fancy a buffet-style meal where the buffet comes to you? My friend, I present you Rioz. If I said this place did excess to an extreme, I’d be severely understating the case. It’s a full-blown vegetarian nightmare. Imagine this - you flip a card on your table from red (hold it partner) to green (which means go) and in seconds a dozen Brazilians surround you with razor sharp knives and hunks of meat that could possibly have been carved off of a whale (or Bigfoot). It’s really no joke.

As part of the team-building process, the BI crew trekked up to Myrtle Beach this past spring for an Insight Trip™. The fruits (or meats) of our labor is the Rioz website, one of 6 restaurant concepts in the TBonz family. We set out to capture the atmosphere of each place on the sites… in this case with the judicious use of fire and cutlery.

Check out Rioz Brazilian Steakhouse.

TIAACREFowns.org

Saw this article today in the NYT….an overview of a new marketing campaign for TIAA-CREF. A cool idea from the financial services organization and its agency Modernista. As a non-profit provider to non-profits they’re aiming to leverage the idea behind the domain to separate themselves from the for-profit pack. Talk about owning a category benefit….and they have the muscle to do just that. In addition to the campaign they’ve launched a new site called powerof.org.

Blue Ion Welcomes James the Intern

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Part of Blue Ion’s strategic, “10 Year Plan for Excellence and World Domination” includes the aggressive use (and misuse) of interns.

To that end, please give a warm welcome to James the Intern (JTI). We’ve disguised him here to protect him and his family from the usual throngs of adoring fans and attention that comes with being a member of the BI team.
