Nonlinear Content Consumption

What the crap is “nonlinear content consumption,” you ask?

You do it every day while browsing the web. By controlling your browser, your mouse, deciding which links to click on, and (especially) your interactions with applications outside of your browser – email, chat, and, in RP’s case, his hotornot widget.

In short: nonlinear content consumption is now the norm. No longer do we just sit and watch TV. We watch TV, browse the Web, IM our friends, and watch YouTube videos.

However, watching YouTube – and most other Web videos – is still a linear experience. Why? Because you only have two options: play or pause. There’s no sense of true engagement and manipulation of the content. Notice most videos are one minute or less.
